Position Summary

The Art Director is responsible for creative vision, design, and art direction for Local Now and other emerging digital products. The role will set the design standard for the company and the news media industry in a unfettered, creative-forward environment. The creative vision set would be across TV, mobile, and desktop environments allowing for ultimate creative expression.

The Art Director works in an collaborative agile environment with developers to understand technological capabilities, with product managers to understand business strategy, and with senior leaders from editorial and marketing to capture the other elements of creative expression. This position also works with audiences, testing design ideas and assumptions, and validating prototype mockups to help deliver a best-in-class media experience.

The Art Director is the subject matter expert in the UI, UX and motion graphics for enterprise-class tools and products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Define the design and creative vision for Local Now and other emerging digital products
  • Lead and drive design decisions for multiple brands across various platforms from content to UI and UX
  • Drive the execution against the design plan and ensure vision is achieved through collaboration across functional teams
  • Create innovative user experiences for new and extended product offerings
  • Provide internal partners with design standards, tools, and guidance on communicating brand image and identity
  • Facilitate collaboration and engagement between members of the team to ensure sound design, editing, motion graphics, composition layout and interactivity align with product vision
  • Create information architectures, wire frame screen flows, prototypes, design briefs, design specs and guidelines with minimal direction
  • Collaborate seamlessly with internal cross-functional and external agency teams in an Agile environment to deliver against creative vision
  • Influence product teams and the organization to achieve solutions that produce great results in terms of user adoption and engagement
  • Proactively identify architectural weaknesses in the UX and recommending appropriate solutions
  • Create full graphic packages using Adobe After Effects for video content that is complimentary to the app experience.

Education, Experience, Certification Requirements

  • A minimum of 7-10 years of professional experience in motion graphics, UI|UX design, brand development and project management is preferred
  • Masters preferred or Undergraduate degree in graphic design, art, human-computer Interaction, communications or a related field
  • Platforms: Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows
  • Demonstrated strength with Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects), any interactive prototyping software
  • Experience in conceptualizing and executing graphics packages for video content is a plus
  • Demonstrated experience developing and communicating UX patterns, design guidelines, and templates

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to design and deliver a UX that is rich, immersive, pleasing, simple, and easy to navigate
  • Creating early conceptual designs, demonstrating innovation
  • Critical thinking and problem solving for screen architecture/layout and technological hurdles is desired
  • Design complete suite of screens that effectively deliver on business goals and requirements
  • Experience working within an Agile project methodology a plus
  • Expertise with Adobe After Effects is strongly preferred
  • Facilitate development of product prototypes for usability testing and proof-of-concept purposes
  • Gathering and assessing business requirements from product and segment representatives
  • Knowledge and experience developing cohesive brand experiences by creating and maintaining a style guide
  • Mobile and tablet app design for iOS, and Android platforms
  • Producing detailed page schematics and specifications
  • Site mapping, interaction flows/maps, and wireframing
  • Strong multitasking and thorough communication needed
  • Works the with the Technology Team to understand the documented technology standards for the platform and browser/OS specifications and bears responsibility to ensure all design assets track to technology and program standards
