Position Summary

Weather Group Television is a content company that encompasses programming, distribution, broadcast operations, video technology, and addressable TV advertising platforms. At this point in its lifecycle, a new growth and operating strategy is being deployed to effectively compete in a dynamic media market. The focus will be on building brands, gaining market share and expanding into innovative new growth vectors. The building blocks of this strategy are unique and differentiated strengths in their first-class storm coverage, including trusted meteorologists who analyze, forecast and report the weather, as well as proprietary localization capabilities. These assets are deployed across a range of distinctive properties, including The Weather Channel, which as one of the most widely distributed television networks for over 30 years, has inspired viewers to explore, investigate and appreciate the experience of weather in all its forms through their various properties including Weatherscan, Local Now, and The Weather Channel Radio Network.

The Strategy and Operations team is a highly visible corporate team of 5 professionals who act as in-house consultants/analysts/strategists/investment bankers responsible for leading strategic planning processes; identifying, evaluating, and executing business development initiatives; and providing data analytics, strategic and operational insights, and market research. This entrepreneurial team is at the forefront of driving strategic and tactical change across the company to achieve short-term and long-term goals.

Reporting to the VP of Strategy & Operations, the Manager of Strategy & Business Development will be responsible for supporting the strategic thinking of the company as a whole and development of a strategy to grow revenue and audience through innovative means across a range of platforms and products. This role will be charged with helping to identify and execute monetization opportunities that leverage unique assets and capabilities in coordination with external partners and internal stakeholders. A portion of this work will entail striking new partnerships with a range of digital and traditional platforms to syndicate the full breadth of content, spanning audio and video from The Weather Channel and Local Now.  This role will also be responsible for identifying new business opportunities which may include supporting launch of new consumer or business-to-business products and international expansion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works closely with the VP, Strategy & Operations to develop/prioritize corporate strategy, key projects, areas of analysis, and operational benchmarks.
  • Partners in the development, presentation, and execution of the company’s 3-year strategic plan.
  • Develops insights on industry trends, landscape changes, and competitive threats in order to surface new business opportunities for consideration.
  • Defines and researches high-impact revenue opportunities (including partnering with Ad Sales, as appropriate) while assuring alignment to meet the business strategic and financial objectives.
  • Helps execute targeted business development pipelines to grow revenue on video and audio content assets. Supports negotiation and close of deals to deliver the P&L growth.
  • Conducts analysis to identify and articulate the strategic direction of the company, weighing in on financial and operating metrics.
  • Evaluates the economic and strategic costs and benefits of partnerships.
  • Works with product and engineering teams to define and prioritize new products for use in business development.
  • Prepares materials for presentation with Board of Directors and CEO.
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to implement and optimize new partnerships and manage existing relationships.
  • Leads special projects as needed.

Education, Experience, Certification Requirements

  • Strong education credentials: Bachelor’s degree and MBA from top tier business school required.
  • Five years of relevant experience in the media industry, both digital and television; functions could include: strategy, business development, corporate development.
  • Three years at a leading strategy management consulting firm or investment bank.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across editorial, product, technology, and business functions.
  • Functional knowledge of the major business operations including marketing, sales, content development and technology.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience structuring and negotiating deals with third parties to develop and deliver a product.
  • Track record of strong interpersonal and communication skills for a wide range of audiences; clarity, tact, professionalism delivered verbally, in writing and through formal presentations.
  • Expert level knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint and demonstrated experience in modeling, analysis, and presentation creation.
  • Strong intellect, business acumen, strategic mind that sees possibilities for growth. Skilled in moving fluidly from global discussion into details, and bringing expansive thinking into actionable plans.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively present key findings to senior management and board.
  • Exceptional analytical skills and structured thinking. Understands the task at hand and synthesizes the main considerations. Ability to articulate problems, solutions, and theories to colleagues at all levels. Proven financial modeling expertise.
  • Quickly sees big picture and intuitively understands how ‘puzzle pieces’ fit together.
  • Ability to identify and frame opportunities, execute analyses, develop business cases and recommendations, and drive stakeholder alignment. Track record of aligning activities with strategies and measuring business impact
  • Influences and respectfully challenges the status quo, leading to improved decision-making. Enjoys a good debate to explore opportunities from a variety of perspectives and supports their point of view.

Hours
