Position Summary

This role will supervise the Production Operations staff, production scheduling and will oversee all work that occurs in the Weather Group Television control rooms and studios in both live and pre-production environments.  This position will have an in-depth technical understanding of production equipment and all processes and workflows used for control room and studio operations.  In addition, this position will coordinate with different internal departments to support all productions for Weather Group Television initiatives and goals.


As Weather Group Television is a 24 / 7 operation, this position will be expected to maintain a presence during critical on-air productions and, when necessary, work extended hours and/or multiple consecutive days to meet the need of the production or project.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise the Production Operations staff and all work that occurs in production control rooms and studios, including scheduling of personnel and all production resources for 24/7 day-to-day delivery of Weather Group Television programming initiatives.
  • Make scheduling adjustments as needed per operational guidelines to meet requirements while staying within budget limits.   Manage staffing for full-time, part-time and overtime hours.
  • Maintain a complete operational understanding of all control room and studio job functions, processes, procedures and workflows; maintain and utilize in-depth technical knowledge of all production control room and studio systems. Use this knowledge to address and/or communicate issues and manage staff performance.
  • Manage initiatives that create efficiencies by aligning job responsibilities to meet company goals.
  • Set performance goals and standards that align with corporate expectations; conduct scheduled performance reviews holding staff accountable for their performance. Coordinate with HR liaison to address hiring, promotions and performance issues in a timely manner.
  • Develop and coordinate training opportunities for Production Operations staff and participate in department planning for the improvement of technical centers and growth for personnel.
  • Demonstrate a variety of writing skills from technical drafts and mass communication to succinct summary emails for upper management Coordinate all technical and personnel resources for production control room and studios, including management of specific equipment, supplies and expendables inventory.
  • Coordinate with Engineering department to ensure that all control room and studio equipment is functioning properly.
  • Act as a liaison between the Television Production/Operations teams and Engineering department, show producers and other Editorial teams.  
  • Ahead of inclement weather that could impact the Atlanta production facility, proactively contact WGT operational teams to activate pre-storm event back-up systems / procedures.
  • Manage projects as assigned by Director of Studio Operations.
  • Other duties as directed.

Education, Experience, Certification Requirements

  • Degree in video production, communications or related field preferred, or comparable work experience.
  • Ten years of hands on experience in live television production.
  • Ability to recommend and set strategic direction and goals for the Production Operations team as well as individual goals for team members
  • Excellent communication and team-building skills with the ability to relate with sensitivity to the unique needs and problems of a 24 x 7 operation with critical deadlines.
  • Excellent writing skills with ability to message to direct reports and upper management.
  • Multi-task oriented with proven ability to properly manage assigned resources.
  • Must have good team skills including listening, initiative, and follow through.
  • Must be able to see technical issues in light of operational requirements and act on them accordingly.
  • Strong computer skills required.
  • Must be well organized.

  • May be required to lift lighting fixtures and/or replace light fixtures. Fixtures may weigh as much as 20 lbs
  • May be required to lift and move a ladder to replace light fixtures. Ladders may weigh as much as 20 lbs.
  • May be required to move and lift set pieces. Set Pieces may range between 20 and 100 lbs. Anything over 20 lbs would be carried by multiple crew members.
